Howard Dean '66

Howard Dean, the blogging populist candidate for President, and I attended the same high school! He arrived three months after I left.

St. George's School is probably not like the school you attended. For one thing, it's in Newport, Rhode Island, on a 200-acre hilltop overlooking the Atlantic. For another, it boasts a beautiful gothic chapel complete with gargoyles and its own ocean-going sailboat. When I attended, the student body numbered 214 boys.

Now attendance is up to 335, male and female. Average class size is 10. Tuition for boarders is $30,000/year. The S.G. mascot is still, of course, the dragon.

Actually, you might be surprised, given the substantial financial aid available now, how diverse St. George's really is! I encountered more interesting people - from different economic backgrounds - at S.G. than I do now.

I am a pro bono lawyer at the Indiana Protection & Advocacy Services Commission and certainly do not fit the affluent stereotype associated with St. George's. Nonetheless, I graduated from S.G. in 1989 and arguable received a better education there than I did subsequently at Columbia University and law school at Georgetown.

I am also a graduate of St. George's (2001)and as a full scholarship student, I can guarentee there is currently at least some deversity on campus. I have been watching Howard Dean and his campaign efforts. I am interested to see how the world percieves our beloved school. To me, St. George's was not much like the descriptions I find on the internet. Although I graduated several decades after Howard Dean, there are so many traditions that run through the bloodlines of our school. I hope certian misleading conclusions are not drawn by the public. I would hate to see the integrity of St. George's reduced in any way.

"St. George’s prep school and that well-known incubator of chief executives."

Dean notes that he attended the posh St. George's School in Newport, R.I., "an incredibly beautiful setting, up on a hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean."

"Dean also reminisces about his fraught relationship with alcohol - a narrative that parallels the experience of fellow Eastern Establishment scion George W. Bush, a graduate of Phillips Andover Academy. "

"Dean even went to a slightly more socially exclusive prep school, St. George's..."

It's not all lies - not all of it. That's the age-old dilemma.

Having recently graduated from St. George's (as a full-scholarship student) this past May, and having been on the campus for most of my life as my mom works there, I believe I can vouch for the diversity on St. George's campus as well as its authenticity. Like Monica said, St. George's has a very diverse student body. Some of my best friends hail from all over the US, Saudi Arabia, Canada and England as well as Africa and Asia. What high school can give you that? Also, SG bodes a long list of traditions that have not changed since their creation. Yes, as a student I myself partook in jokes about SG's exclusivity; for example my fellow seniors and I enjoyed dubbing it "St. Gorgeous". Though our school is rather young, founded in 1896, I believe St. George's is the same now as it was in Dean's era, however now it is coed (a change the mid-70's brought about). It still strives to teach the importance of academics, athletics and community. It is a prep school, it prepares us not only for college, but for life. Though I am only entering my second semster of college, I already feel exponentially more confident about my current standing in school than my peers. I'm sure Monica can back up these feelings, as she left SG only 2 years before I did (and I hear she's now taken a place between the goal posts on the hockey team like I did at SG, go Monica!) and has experienced more college than I have. I, too, am curious to see how the world comes to view SG as they judge based soley on Dean. And thus far, I am impressed with Dean.

I did a search for talk about sports as I am looking for information on where Halifax Mooseheads players lived and the history about them and their culture. We have and have had hockey players from all over the world play with the local hockey team here in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I am researching anyone who has played in the past and the present for the Halifax Mooseheads hockey team. As I was web surfing, going from one topic to the next I came upon your website as I was looking for hockey blogs, as I thought about creating a blog on the Halifax Mooseheads hockey team. Anyways I read your blog to see if you had any information on how to operate a blog.
I will be back to see if you add anything new that might help me.
Good luck with your website.
Take care and God Bless
Steve , A Halifax Mooseheads Hockey Fan
