Healing ADD
Simple Exercises That Will Change Your Daily Life

Thom Hartmann, 1998

This is Hartmann's how-to book. Lots of reliance on Neuro Linguistic Programming. How to focus. How to change your experience of time. Take charge of your life. Rearrange the furniture, wear a new wardrobe, restructure your recollection of past events.

"Their craving for new experience and excitement is seen as an inability to make a commitment, a failure of will, an emotional weakness, or an unreliability in a world dependent upon the predictable and reliable to work properly.

Beliefs are stories we tell ourselves about how things are.

The heart, stomach, liver, and small intestine are among a few of the organs which have been discovered to have extensive neural networks and to host measurable amounts of neurotransmitters which were previously believed to be the sole province of the brain. It's looking more and more like the entire body--virtually every cell--is one way or another interconnected with the process of what we call consciousness.

Reconstructing the Past

Submodalities we commonly use to experience reality and store memory:

* Visual
* Auditory
* Gustatory
* Olfactory
* Kinesthetic

If you know what modalities and submodalities you use to store a particular type of memory-happy, sad, hopeful, afraid, neutral, whatever-then you can "adjust" the memories you have of the past to change their emotional feel.

Summon up a memory. Imagine a control panel just below the image, with dials and levers that you can use to change the various submodalities. Change b&w to color, boost the volume, change the taste. One of the most powerful submodalities is location.

Once you've determined the common submodality elements among all your boring memories, not the submodality details.

The eyes are part of the brain. When a person facing you looks up and to your right, they're probably accessing a visual memory. When they look sideways or to your right, they're probably remembering a sound or voice. Down and to your left, they're accessing feeling. (About half of left-handed people are wired exactly opposite of this.)

NLP = Make your own movies. Reorganize your timelines.

Exercise to expand attentional freedom (and maybe a richer and deeper and more soulful experience of life itself): Sit. See (notice what you see, its color, size, clarity, brightness, texture). Hear. Feel. Smell and taste. Time. Space. Thinking. Self-ness. Cycle through them again, at least the first four.

A large part of healing from the experience of growing up as a square peg in a round hole is to find the square hole in which we can fit. Most often, people don't make intentional choices about their jobs or even their maters: they take what comes along.
