Ellen Wagner, Clark Quinn, and I hopped on the U-bahn, and headed to the German Historical Museum on Under den Linden.

We stopped along the way for glog and gluhwein. It’s biting cold outside. The Christmas Markets are utterly charming.

The Zeughaus museum has mounted an unprecedented exhibition on Hitler’s rise to power. Unfortunately, no photography. The permanent exhibit on German history does permit photography. The 1918 – 1936 years provide the prologue to Germany’s dark chapter. (By the way, all photos here are clickable.)

Filled to overflowing with Germanic history, we were about to head back to the Christmas Markets. I wanted to peak into the galleries housing the history from 1200 to 1890. We got hooked. Wonderfully presented art and artifacts brought the saga alive. School would have been so much more fun had our teachers led us on a tour of this place; I’m sure I’d know more than I learned from reading Modern European History, Hugh Trevor-Roper, and G. M. Trevelyan.

It was getting dark outside as we departed the Zeughaus:

We walked up Unter den Linden and caught the U-bahn to Potsdamer Platz for supper.
